In the Company of Cheerful Ladies (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency #6)In the Company of Cheerful Ladies by Alexander McCall Smith

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I've tried to read this series before. I finished No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency years ago. I've tried to read Tears of the Giraffe, and not gotten very far.

I'm not sure what possessed me to pick this up.

I wanted a mystery, in a foreign locale. Botswana seemed pretty foreign. Except as McCall writes it this might as easily have been in Hampstead as Gaborone. And the mysteries...lack the urgency and bite I really want. Really, I just want a simple B&E, with maybe some grand theft here or there, and the occasional body. Pumpkin? Really? Who left the pumpkin at the house on Zebra Drive? That's one of the critical mysteries.

*Sigh* As lovely character study, these books work, I guess. Why, oh why, do I keep forgetting that these have as much to do with mysteries as Doc Martin has with being a medical show.

I just may have to read something like Night Soldiers.
