The Alchemyst (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, #1)The Alchemyst by Michael Scott

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I know I'm late to the party, and I'm not sure how I managed to miss this series, but I'm onboard now.

I really enjoyed this novel. While it's clearly a YA book, it has mature writing and vocabulary, and the characters are complex and interesting. In those respects I find it superior to the Rick Riordan books (which I also enjoyed), with which it shares some similarities in conceits.

I'm going to hold off on the second volume because I'm currently reading Neil Gaiman's American Gods. I had no idea what that was about until I picked it based solely on strong recommendations from friends, and found it and The Alchemyst have a great deal in common.

So, I think I'll put the Nicholas Flamel series on a back burner for a bit. Still, I'm glad to discover a new series of fairly short individual novels that are engaging and well-written.
