Al and Tipper

So, there is much hand-wringing and/or snickering, from pundits, media, and the average Joe dem (hand-wringing) and GOP (snickering) that Al and Tipper Gore are separating.

For the record, the average marriage in America, accounting for divorce and mortality, is 24 years. Al and Tipper have been married for 40.

For the record, the average length of marriage in America before divorce ends it is 8 years. Al and Tipper were married for 40.

No matter how you look at it, their marriage is a testament to perseverance, mutual support, and responsibility. They're even ending their marriage with dignity.

Forty years, people. Think about it. Neither hand-wringing nor snickering are appropriate. I say "Bravo!"

Oh, that's sad. I hadn't heard about that.

Bless them. I always thought that they were a very nice couple.

Good on them for sticking it out through all that they have experienced.

a little bit about marriage statistics
So I agree with your sentiment of "Bravo!", and so this post is probably a bit off-topic.

Marriage statistics are a bit skewed, and you can see how once you notice that 50% of all marriages end up in divorce, but the chance of a first marriage surviving intact is about 2/3. The numbers get driven pretty dramatically by the folks who get married and divorced multiple times.
