The Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #2)The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I read The Lightning Thief last year and liked it, but only just. I actually like this entry in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series more than the first. Perhaps it's because there is a lot less of the foregrounding and more story. Maybe it's that it isn't quite so much "cross-country buddy movie" and is more grounded in the mythology. Certainly as someone who had devoured Edith Hamilton's Mythology by the age of 11 so many times that I needed a new copy I am a sucker for the stories.

Yes, it's uneven. Yes it's geared toward YA readers. Still--marvelously diverting, and I have the sense of wanting to read the next installment, not just the "Oh, I guess I want to see where this is going" reaction that often hits me after the second volume in a series.

If you enjoy YA lit you might really like the Hunger Games, I loved the series (Marcus too).

So I think once you're past the first book, you're in for the series. I like The Titan's Curse the best out of the bunch, but I think the three that are still ahead of you are all worth reading.

I read this one first, and now I really want to go back and read "The Lightning Thief". I particularly liked the modern twists on the classic myths.

I loved this series, and have also read the first books of his other two series (Red Pyramid and Lost Hero). Can't wait for the new books to come out!
