Kings of the NorthKings of the North by Elizabeth Moon

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Arrrrrrrrrrraggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh.
Dammit, dammit, dammit, dammit.
I finished it.
Worst part? Third volume is a year away.
*sigh*
Really--I tried to make it last. But I just couldn't. stop. reading.

So if it's so wonderful, why only 4 stars out of 5?

Because it is not as totally wonderful as Oath of Fealty, the first volume, which I did give 5 stars to. It suffered by comparison. There are some pacing things I didn't like, some sequencing that I found a bit jarring. She's trying to keep a number of balls in the air, and keep them balanced, and sometimes in this volume it gets a little wobbly. I didn't find that to be true in Oath of Fealty. But middle volumes are always hard.

What is wonderful is the rich story, the well-realized characters, and the refusal to give in to the easy answer.

Thanks. I'll have to go find Oath of Fealty... except, I *hate* waiting for the next volume in a series to come out. That's why I prefer to read books by dead authors. :-)

FWIW, here is my review of Oath of Fealty:
http://meirwen.livejournal.com/428169.html

This is transfered from my Goodreads review--there it shows up with the 5 stars, but for some reason the code didn't transfer right--so it shows up with 4 stars--and I haven't the ambition to re-do the transfer.

Thanks!

But... you gave that one four stars too. :-)

EDIT: Oops, I replied and it looks like you edited your response in the mean time. So, inconsistency noted and excused. :-)

I just bought both Oath of Fealty and Kings of the North, but I've been dithering about starting them for the exact same reason. I *H*A*T*E* having to wait for the next book to come out! I don't think I'll be able to hold off though . . .

I wish I could focus on reading these days. My mind wanders. So I probably won't buy the Game of Thrones books, though I'm enjoying the series immensely.

btw, LOVE the icon. Might steal it!
